It’s a new year and a natural time to reflect. As much as it’s only a day’s difference, it is a turning point and can be a great time to draw a line under certain things of the past and look with a fresh perspective on the future. And so it’s the time when many people set their ‘new year’s resolutions’. To stop certain things, to start other things and to do better etc.
Unfortunately statistics show that less than 10% of people who make new year’s resolutions keep them. Over 47% give up after just 1 month. So no wonder so many people think it’s a waste of time.
But this isn’t quite true – it’s just the approach people make at setting the things they want to stop or achieve isn’t geared up to work.
The difference between resolutions and goals? – Resolutions you just say you are going to do – a goal is decided and a commitment is made to take action to achieve. And a plan is created in order to take whatever necessary steps it takes to achieve the goal. A Harvard business study showed that people who set goals are 10 times more successful than those who don’t, and the people who wrote their goals down were 3 times more successful than the people who just talked about their goals.
“Whatever you want to succeed at – you need to write them down as goals, and refer to them often. Everyday!”
If you really want something deep down, you can make it happen – you just need to get clear what result you want, plan out the steps that will get you there, and commit to taking action in making it happen. It actually can be really simple and the more you can get the steps really clear – it’s just a case of following from step 1 through to 10 or whatever. We have to set it up so that no matter what happens – we keep on target and keep going. Regardless of what’s happening around us or how we are feeling.
This is why most people don’t continue. And this is why and how the 1% earn the most wealth in the world achieve that. It’s not through luck – it’s through getting strategic and determination to see a goal through to completion and not allowing anything to get in the way!
Why bother setting goals?
The last 2 years has made us all realise that sometimes we have very little control over what happens to us in our lives. 2020/21 have been the most challenging years for all of us and one thing I know now more then ever is that we need to get intentional about what we really want in life. And where we are heading to. Otherwise we will either just drift through life, with the potential of one day looking back with regret, of the things we didn’t assert ourselves to do, when it may be too late. Or we miss and waste opportunities that will come to us, because we’re unclear of what we want/ where we are going.
For me, those are the saddest things in life – unfulfilled potential and worse still, regret over what we didn’t do. There was a study done of the biggest regrets of people in their last days of life and those were the main two. I know for sure, that will never happen to me. I want to grab life with both hands and fully live every breath of it. As we really do only get one go at this. Are you making it count?
4 key things to know about how to set goals that you will achieve;-
1- Without a clear target, you’ll never hit your mark. That’s why it’s crucial to learn how to set goals that are clear, measurable and actionable.
2- Belief! Belief that it can be done and belief that you can do it! If you want to dream big and start going to the next level in whatever area you wish to – work on your beliefs! Make sure they support you in achieving your goal, and not blocking you. Along with having a practise of visualisation of achieving the goal. The more we see it in our mind, our whole physiology re-wires to be ready for it to happen. This is where working with a coach will ensure you will get there!
3- Decide. And commit!
- The Latin root for the word decide is cut off. Cut off all other possibilities or distractions. Total commitment to see what you have decided through.
- This means getting really clear the milestones to work through to get to the goal and then total focus to get there. Taking consistent, daily action.
4 – Get inspired before you take action!
This is the real secret to success. That helps you to keep going even when the going gets tough. When it’s pouring with rain and your goal was to run everyday – what is going to get you out there and do it? When you’ve had a bad day and just want to drown your sorrows with alcohol or sugary treats – how can you stay on target?
- Every time you take action towards your goal – you need to remind yourself of WHY you are doing this. The exciting achievement that you ARE GOING TO GET by continuing. This is where visualising is key – see it so clearly in your mind that you get tingles of excitement that it is coming – you are on your way to it. And then go and take action!
Goals allow us to grow and evolve, to step into the best versions of ourselves that we can be and seek out the amazing opportunities available to us right now, that allow us to create a life we dream about.
Most people are never taught how to set goals, or how to plan for success.
We need to know;-
- What questions to ask ourselves to get clear what we want and most importnly, WHY we want that.
- What’s realistic / unrealistic
- What areas need to focus on to maximise your chance of success.
- How to take big dreams (life goals) and break them down into a do-able plan.
So how do you go about setting goals that you WILL achieve?
1- Take some time to ‘just be’. To sit and allow yourself to dream a bit – now you know what you know, now that you have a framework and the inspiration that I have given you – what would you love to achieve in the next year or so?
2- Write it down! A goal not written down is just an idea.
Have a few goals, not too many. And have your goals where you can see them everyday.
3- Play with imagining your goals already achieved. How does it feel? What will that look like in your life? How will that change things? What improvements will be made? The more you spend time visualising and FEELING this – the more successful you will be at achieving. ALL successful people do this. Check out Connor McGregor’s talks about this, or Will Smith, Denzel Washington etc. Do this EVERYDAY!
4- Now get methodical – what are all the steps you will need to take to get you there?
This is your game-plan, your strategy. Write it down. Highlight the milestones that you can check in with your progress on the way.
“It’s just small steps that will get you to the top of Everest! One step at a time.”
5- Review! Check in on your progress often. Focus on your goals daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. And celebrate your achievements along the way. Celebrate showing up consistently! The more clear your goal posts that you set, the more you will know that you are on target to achieving – and that will motivate you to keep going!
You can follow this methodology to achieve any goal. Apparently anyone can become a self-made millionaire in 3 years. And the only way that a goal this size will be achieved is by following these exact steps that I have given to you.
We need to follow a specific strategy if we want to achieve the things we really want. If our goals are big, and something we’ve wanted for a while – it can be challenging – but not impossible!
I hope you have found this helpful and inspiring! And my intention is for this to motivate you to really dream big and go for what you truly deserve. Which is to be really happy and fulfilled in every area of your life. It is possible and you can do it!
